Specialist in otorhinolaryngology
View profileAn ENT doctor (otorhinolaryngologist) examines complaints of the ear, nose, sinuses, mouth and throat. Many of them clear up on their own, but an examination is worthwhile when a complaint lasts longer, keeps coming back or gets in the way of everyday life.
Colds, a runny nose and a sore throat are most often passing viral infections. An examination makes sense when the symptoms do not settle or keep coming back, when earache or facial pressure does not ease, when your hearing does not return after a cold, or when hoarseness stays after it.
When it is not clear which specialist is right for your symptoms, dizziness being one example, the guide Which doctor should I see? helps you choose the right examination.
The examination begins with a discussion: the doctor asks when your symptoms started, how often they occur, what makes them worse and which medication you have used so far. An examination of the ears, nose, mouth and throat follows. Based on the findings, the ENT doctor makes a diagnosis or recommends further diagnostics, treatment and a follow-up examination.
ENT examinations at the polyclinic are carried out by Dr Nebojša Mićović, ENT specialist, and Lieutenant Colonel Dr Uglješa Grgurević, specialist in otorhinolaryngology. When your symptoms call for the opinion of another specialist, such as a neurologist for dizziness, that examination can be booked at the same polyclinic.
Earwax (cerumen) naturally protects the ear canal and usually clears out on its own. In some people it builds up and forms a plug, especially with a narrow ear canal and frequent use of cotton buds, or when wearing hearing aids or earplugs. A plug usually feels like a blocked ear with reduced hearing, sometimes with ringing or itching, and the symptoms often get worse after a shower or a swim, when the wax swells.
If an earwax plug is the cause of your symptoms, ear irrigation can be done after the examination. Irrigation is done only when the doctor judges it to be safe, so it is not done if damage to the eardrum or an ear infection is suspected.
No special preparation is needed for an ENT examination. If you have previous results, such as a hearing test, a sinus scan or a discharge letter, bring them along, together with a list of the medication, nasal sprays and drops you use. It helps to note down when your symptoms started and how often they come back. If you have been using a nasal spray for a long time, tell the doctor, as long-term use of some sprays can itself keep the nose blocked.
If you suspect an earwax plug, do not try to remove it with cotton buds, as this often pushes the wax deeper into the ear canal. Before the examination, do not put any drops in your ear that a doctor has not recommended. Prices for the examination and for ear irrigation are listed in the price list.
The polyclinic is not an emergency service. Call emergency services (194) straight away or go to an emergency department if you have difficulty breathing, cannot swallow your saliva, have a nosebleed that does not stop despite pressure, swelling around the eye or on the face with a high temperature, or dizziness with weakness of one side of the body, difficulty speaking or problems with vision.
Sudden hearing loss in one ear should not be put off: see an ENT doctor without delay, on the same day if possible. Severe throat pain with a high temperature and difficulty opening the mouth is also a reason to see a doctor on the same day.
See an ENT doctor when earache, a blocked nose, sinus pressure, hoarseness or a sore throat lasts longer or keeps coming back, and also for ringing in the ears, reduced hearing or snoring. Sudden hearing loss should be examined without delay.
No referral is needed for an ENT examination at Miren Medic. You book your appointment directly, online or by phone.
At Miren Medic Polyclinic an examination with Lieutenant Colonel Dr Uglješa Grgurević costs 6.000 RSD, and an examination with Dr Nebojša Mićović 6.000 RSD. All prices are listed in the price list.
Ear irrigation costs 3.000 RSD. Before irrigation the doctor examines the ear and assesses whether irrigation is the right solution for you.
No special preparation is needed. Bring previous results and a list of the medication, sprays and drops you use. If you have an earwax plug, do not try to remove it with cotton buds.
Dizziness can come from the inner ear, but also from the nervous system. Dizziness with ringing in the ears or reduced hearing is examined by an ENT doctor, while dizziness with numbness, double vision or difficulty speaking is for a neurologist. If numbness, difficulty speaking or weakness come on suddenly, call emergency services (194).
