A general practitioner is the first doctor to turn to when a new complaint appears and you are not sure which specialist you need. The most common reasons for a visit are a raised temperature, a sore throat, a cough and other signs of infection, pain of unclear origin, allergic reactions, tiredness that lasts longer than usual, or changes you notice in yourself and do not know how to interpret.
General medicine is not only for acute complaints. You can also see a general practitioner to monitor a chronic condition, check your blood pressure, go through laboratory results or get advice on diet, habits and vaccination. The consultation begins with a conversation about your symptoms, how long they have lasted, the medication you take and any previous illnesses. Your general condition is then assessed, your vital signs are measured and a physical examination is carried out, and based on the findings the doctor proposes treatment, further tests or a follow-up visit. The examination is tailored to the complaint: with an infection, for example, the doctor examines your throat, listens to your lungs and checks your temperature, and with pain assesses where it is, what it feels like and how long it has lasted.
When blood or urine tests are needed, the doctor refers you to the laboratory and then goes through the results with you and explains what they mean. Preparing for your consultation and follow-up visits
Bring your previous medical records to the consultation: laboratory results, discharge letters, specialist reports and a list of the medicines and supplements you take, with doses. If a blood test is planned alongside the consultation, some analyses are done in the morning on an empty stomach, so please check this when you book. Do not stop any medication you take regularly on your own before the visit. At the end of the consultation you agree with the doctor whether a follow-up is needed and which changes to watch for in the meantime.
A follow-up visit is booked when the doctor needs to see how a treatment is working, review new results or monitor a condition that has already been assessed. When not to wait for an appointment but to call an ambulance
A booked consultation with a general practitioner is meant for complaints that can wait for an appointment. Some conditions cannot wait, and for them you should call an ambulance on 194 straight away:
- severe chest pain or tightness, especially with sweating, nausea or pain spreading to the arm or jaw
- a suddenly drooping face, weakness of one side of the body, difficulty speaking or sudden loss of vision
- difficulty breathing or choking
- swelling of the lips, tongue or throat after an insect sting, a medicine or food
- a high temperature with a stiff neck, drowsiness or confusion
- loss of consciousness, heavy bleeding or a serious injury
