When to see a surgeon

The surgical clinic at Miren Medic Polyclinic is for examinations and minor procedures in general surgery, proctology and vascular surgery that do not require a hospital stay. The surgeon assesses your complaint, explains the findings and advises whether you need a procedure, further diagnostics or simply monitoring.

Reasons to book a surgical examination

• a lump or growth on or under the skin, such as a lipoma or an atheroma, that is growing, bothering you or has become inflamed
• pain, swelling or discharge in the tailbone area, which can point to a pilonidal sinus (an ingrown hair)
• itching, pain or bleeding when passing stool, or the sensation of a lump at the end of the bowel
• a painful, warm swelling next to the anus, which may be a perianal abscess
• varicose veins, swelling, pain or a feeling of heaviness in the legs
• a wound that needs dressing, a healing check or suture removal

The most common conditions in brief

A lipoma is a soft, movable lump of fatty tissue under the skin, usually painless. An atheroma is a lump in the skin filled with thick contents, which can become inflamed and painful. A pilonidal sinus is a channel in the skin above the tailbone in which hairs become trapped, leading to repeated inflammation. A perianal abscess is a collection of pus next to the anus that causes severe pain and swelling.

What the examination is like and which procedures are done at the polyclinic

The examination begins with a discussion of your symptoms, previous treatment and the medication you take, followed by a clinical examination. Surgical oncology and proctology examinations are carried out by Dr Branimir Nešković, specialist in general surgery. For complaints at the end of the bowel a proctology examination with anoscopy is done, as described on the Proctology page. Surgical examinations are also carried out by Assist. Prof. Dr Marko Jović, specialist in plastic and reconstructive surgery, who also performs minor surgical procedures.

When the findings call for it, the following are done at the polyclinic under local anesthesia (LA):

• surgical removal of lesions from the skin and subcutaneous tissue, such as moles, lipomas and atheromas
• pilonidal sinus procedures
• sclerotherapy for hemorrhoids, covered in more detail in the article Hemorrhoids: the four grades and their treatment
• incision of a perianal abscess, that is, opening and draining it

A mole that has changed shape, color or size is usually examined first by a dermatologist at a mole check, where it is assessed whether it should be removed. The surgical oncology examination is for assessing lumps and lesions that need to be clarified, and for advice on further diagnostics and treatment.

Vascular surgery

Dr Anica Ilić, specialist in vascular surgery, provides consultations for diseases of the arteries and veins, including varicose veins. The examination assesses the condition of the blood vessels and gives a recommendation for further treatment, and patients facing a decision about surgery can also get a second expert opinion.

Care after a procedure

Wound dressing for a smaller or larger area, healing checks and suture removal are done at the polyclinic, at times set by the surgeon. After the procedure you receive instructions for wound care and a follow-up appointment.

Plastic and reconstructive surgery

Assist. Prof. Dr Marko Jović, a specialist in plastic and reconstructive surgery, carries out examinations and minor surgical procedures at the polyclinic, as well as eyelid surgery and ear correction. Upper eyelid surgery costs 100.000 – 120.000 RSD, lower eyelid surgery 140.000 RSD, and upper and lower together 210.000 RSD. Ear correction surgery costs 96.000 RSD.

At the first examination the doctor assesses whether the procedure is justified, explains the recovery and the possible risks, and only then is a date agreed. Read more in our article on eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty).

Preparing for the examination and procedure

For your first examination, bring your existing medical records: previous results, scans, discharge letters and a list of the medication you take. If you take blood thinners or are allergic to any medicine, including local anesthetics, tell the doctor before the procedure. Do not stop any treatment on your own; that is for the doctor to decide.

A proctology examination usually needs no special preparation. If preparation is needed for an examination or procedure after all, you will receive clear instructions when you book. Prices for examinations and procedures are listed in the price list, and you can book an appointment directly, without a referral.

When it is an emergency

The polyclinic is not an emergency service. If you have sudden severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding from a wound or from the end of the bowel, a high temperature with chills together with a painful swelling or redness that is spreading quickly, or a leg that has suddenly become cold, pale and painful, call emergency services (194) straight away or go to an emergency department. The same applies to sudden swelling and pain in one leg with shortness of breath or chest pain.

A painful swelling next to the anus or in the tailbone area should not be put off: book an examination as soon as possible. If a high temperature and general weakness come with the swelling, seek emergency help.
