What a gastroenterologist treats

A gastroenterologist diagnoses and treats diseases of the digestive organs: the esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. The most common reasons for a consultation are:

  • Gastritis and ulcers: pain or burning in the stomach, nausea, belching
  • Helicobacter pylori infection: confirmed by a test and successfully treated with therapy
  • Reflux disease: heartburn and acid coming back up into the esophagus
  • Irritable bowel syndrome: bloating, cramps and changes in bowel habits
  • Fatty liver and raised liver enzymes
  • Gallbladder disease: stones and inflammation
  • Food intolerances: lactose, gluten

What the consultation is like

The consultation is carried out by Assist. Prof. Dr Stanko Petrović, a gastroenterologist with many years of clinical experience. After a detailed discussion of your symptoms and diet comes the examination, and where necessary an abdominal ultrasound, laboratory analyses and a Helicobacter pylori test can all be done straight away. At the end you receive a clear diagnosis, a course of treatment and a follow-up plan.
