An atheroma is a lump in the skin filled with thick contents, which can become inflamed and painful. At the Miren Medic polyclinic an atheroma is removed surgically, under local anaesthesia, after a surgeon's consultation. The procedure is done by Dr Branimir Nešković, a general surgery specialist, who removes lipomas and other skin lesions in the same way.

No referral is needed. You can book online or by phone.

Atheroma or lipoma

Both lumps are common and usually harmless, but they are not the same. The surgeon confirms which one it is at the consultation.

When to show an atheroma to a surgeon

An atheroma that is quiet and does not bother you does not have to come out right away, but these are reasons to have a surgeon look at it.

  • It is growingThe lump is bigger than a few months ago.
  • It is inflamedIt has turned red, feels warm and hurts to the touch.
  • It has openedContents with an unpleasant smell come out of it.
  • It bothers youIt is where clothing, a belt, a razor or a comb rubs it.
  • It is visibleOn the face, neck or head, and you do not like how it looks.
  • You are not sure what it isAny new lump that is growing is worth a consultation.

Why an atheroma should not be squeezed

The contents of an atheroma are enclosed in a thin capsule. When an atheroma is squeezed at home, the contents come out, but the capsule stays in the skin and the atheroma usually fills up again. Squeezing can also bring in bacteria and cause inflammation, after which the lump is more painful and the procedure harder.

That is why an atheroma is removed surgically, together with its capsule. Through a small incision the surgeon takes the lump out whole and closes the wound with stitches. Lipomas and other lesions of the skin and subcutaneous tissue are removed the same way, under local anaesthesia.

How atheroma removal works

From the consultation to stitch removal, in this order.

  1. Surgeon's consultation

The surgeon examines the lump, confirms that it is an atheroma and agrees the procedure. If the atheroma is inflamed, the first decision is how to calm the inflammation.

  2. Local anaesthesia

The area is numbed with a local anaesthetic, so the procedure is not felt as pain, but as pressure and movement.

  3. Removal in one piece

The atheroma is taken out together with its capsule, and the wound is closed with stitches. You go home the same day.

  4. Dressings and stitches

Dressings, wound checks and stitch removal are done at the polyclinic, at times the surgeon sets.

An inflamed atheroma

An inflamed atheroma is red, swollen, warm and painful, and sometimes it opens by itself. When an atheroma is inflamed, the surgeon decides what to do at the consultation. Usually the inflammation is calmed first, and the atheroma is taken out whole once the tissue around it has settled, because it is then easier to remove together with its capsule.

Do not squeeze an inflamed atheroma or pierce it. Book a consultation as soon as possible. If a high temperature, shivering or fast spreading redness appear with the swelling, seek emergency care (194).

Frequently asked questions

Questions patients most often ask before atheroma removal.

How much does atheroma removal cost?
Surgical removal of lesions at Miren Medic costs from 14.000 RSD to 25.000 RSD, depending on the size and position of the lesion. A surgical oncologist consultation with Dr Branimir Nešković is 10.000 RSD. You get the exact amount for your atheroma at the consultation.
Does atheroma removal hurt?
The procedure is done under local anaesthesia, so it is felt as pressure rather than pain. You feel the prick of the anaesthetic. When the anaesthesia wears off, the area may be tender for a few days.
Can an atheroma come back?
If part of the capsule stays in the skin, the atheroma can fill up again. That is why it is not squeezed, but removed surgically in one piece, together with its capsule.
What should I do if an atheroma is inflamed?
Do not squeeze it or pierce it. Book a surgeon's consultation as soon as possible: the surgeon decides how to calm the inflammation and when to remove the atheroma. If you have a high temperature or the redness is spreading fast, seek emergency care (194).
Is there a scar after removal?
A surgical procedure leaves a scar, whose size depends on the size of the atheroma and where it is on the body. The surgeon talks this through with you before the procedure. The scar fades over time, and sun protection helps.
Do I need a referral?
No. You book the surgeon and atheroma removal at Miren Medic directly, online or by phone, without a referral.
